    Ingredients

  • Curry Leaves (kadhi patta)
    - a few
  • Asafoetida(hing)
    - ¼ tsp / 1½ gm
  • Tomatoes, large, chopped
    - 4
  • whole red chillies (sabut lal mirch), broken
    - 2
  • Red gram(arhar dal), soaked for 5 minutes
    - 4 tsp / 20 gm
  • Salt
    - to taste
  • Ginger(adrak), chopped
    - 1 tsp / 5 gm
  • Green chillies
    - 4
  • Turmeric(haldi) powder
    - ¼ tsp / 1½ gm
  • Water
    - 3 cups / 600 ml
  • Green coriander(hara dhaniya), chopped
    - 1 tsp / 5 gm
  • Clarified butter (Ghee)
    - 2 tbsp / 10 gm
  • Mustard seeds (rai)
    - ¾ tsp
  • Cumin seeds (sabut jerra)
    - ¾ tsp

    Method

  1. In a deep pot, add the tomatoes, red gram, salt green chillies, ginger, turmeric powder, water and green coriander and cook for 30-35 minutes. Mash well with a wooden spoon till all the ingredients are well mixed. Keep aside.
  2. Heat the clarified butter in a pan. Add all the ingredients for the tempering. Cook for a few seconds only.
  3. Pour this over the soup. Check for seasoning. Serve hot.
